ASDS/A 2020 Annual Report
ASDS members echo the pioneering spirit of the Society’s rich history of persistent innovators. Many of the Society’s founders and early members were trailblazers, overcoming many obstacles and pushing forward through challenging times to not only establish and build ASDS, but ultimately elevate the specialty of dermatologic surgery. Read the Society's articles "Founders Reminisce," "Annual Meeting Through the Decades," "Innovative Pioneers" and "Education Through the Years" in the Commemorative Program .
The groundwork for the Society began in the summer of 1970 when Drs. Leonard A. Lewis and Sorrel S. Resnik contacted several leading dermatologic surgeons and proposed the idea of an organized effort to advance dermatologic surgery. ASDS membership was open to any dermatologist who was interested, and the founders shared enthusiasm over the fact that no one was excluded. In fact, the original ASDS logo included each of the instruments used during that time to represent all areas of dermatologic surgery.
“ASDS founding members’ main purpose was to promote excellence in patient care through education in dermatologic surgery. There was no thought to establish a splinter group separate from the mainstream of dermatology, but rather an organization to strengthen basic dermatologic practice. The formation of ASDS opened up a whole new avenue for dermatologists.”
Sorrel Resnik, MD ASDS Founding Member
