ASDSA MEDICAL BOARD MEMBER ACADEMY

The ASDSA Medical Board Member Academy is a new invite-only program designed to educate and encourage ASDSA members to become interested in joining their state medical boards. Current and former medical board members who belong to ASDSA were the faculty for the first session (Bruce Brod, MD, Pennsylvania; Amy Derick, MD, Illinois; Alexander Gross, MD, Georgia).

ASDSA STATE LEGISLATOR ACADEMY Ten members joined this new invite-only program that provides support and education to members (and their spouses, if applicable) on how to become a member of their state legislature. The first webinar featured ASDSA member Brent Moody, MD, and ASDSA member and Congressman John Joyce, MD (R-PA) as its faculty. Participants in the State Legislator Academy got to hear first hand what goes into running for office and how to structure a successful campaign. Financial scholarships for the AMA Campaign School were also offered to interested participants.

By encouraging dermatologists to become involved in both the legislative and regulatory process, ASDSA has allies who intimately know the specialty’s needs and can directly impact change.

RESOURCES FOR MEMBERS DURING COVID-19 Offering members information, tools and resources to help manage through and move towards pandemic recover was ASDSA’s vital mission in 2020. ASDSA worked tirelessly to provide timely support throughout the year. Resources included: • Created a compendium of State-Issued American Society of Dermatologic Surgery Association (ASDSA) and American Society for Laser Medicine & Surgery (ASLMS) Guidance for Cosmetic Dermatology Practices During COVID-19

John Joyce, MD

Guidance documents for Reopening Medical Practices and securing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). • Advocacy efforts included lobbying the Administration, Congress and the States to obtain resources needed to keep patients and physcian offices safe and open to care for medical needs. • ASDSA played a leading role in Massachusetts allowing cosmetic dermatologists back to work. ASDSA helped successfully make the case that our members could deliver safe care during the pandemic over "spas" and other non-physicians without wasting scarce PPE.
